Best Project Management Software for Small Business Owners in 2024 | Trello vs Asana vs ClickUp

I've always been a fan of the middle in every situation, and this one is no different.

Asana is the perfect middle spot to be as an online business owner.

In this post, I will compare Asana to a more basic tool and to a more complex tool and tell you the reasons I think Asana is the best choice for small business owners like yourself.

Either keep reading or watch the video below:

Out of the most popular project management tools, Asana is the best because it fits right in the middle.

It's not too complex, it's not too basic, it's just right!

Trello vs Asana

On the simpler end, you have tools like Trello. I started out with Trello, as do a lot of people in the online business space. It was great to start out with and to dip my toes into digital planning and task management. But, there came a point where I needed more.

At a certain point, most business owners will need to be able to do more than what Trello can offer.

Like have different ways to view your data. I especially love the calendar view for planning out my content and really seeing that overview of my weekly tasks.

You can use calendar power ups with Trello, but I think you can only have one power up per board on the free plan, so that gets used up just from the calendar view.

I also need to be able to connect everything, but with good organization, which was lacking with Trello. You could have multiple boards, but they weren't connected in any way. That would just not be something I could deal with at this point in my business.

With Trello, you also can't assign tasks to individuals, which is a huge problem if you have any kind of team. Asana makes team management incredibly easy and fun.

ClickUp vs Asana

Then, on the more complex end, you have ClickUp, which I know has become all the rage lately.

I experimented with ClickUp, and honestly almost switched at one point, but since it is still so new, it has a lot of kinks to work out. So, that was one problem I found with it.

But I also find, from talking to others and working with other online business owners who do end up choosing Asana and having me support them with it, that ClickUp is simply too overwhelming for the average small business owner.

It is a lot more complicated to learn and often just has too much going on than most solopreneurs really need.

When I was really looking into potentially switching to ClickUp from Asana, I read something that stuck with me. It was something along the lines of how ClickUp may offer all these features and it's trying to be this big all-in-one solution, but as with most all-in-one tools, it is doing a decent job at all of those things, but Asana is sticking to its niche and is doing its job very well. I almost never run into glitches or bugs with Asana.

Asana wins for small business owners

When it comes to Asana, it really is the perfect middle. I've helped several online business owners start using Asana, and I've helped them optimize its use through custom systems and support.

After talking to them and learning about their needs, they tend to agree with me that they need that perfect middle option as well.

Asana is simple to start using, but powerful enough to run your entire business (and life) with the right systems.

If you are just starting out and not sure how to set it up or optimize it, or if you've been using it but want to really use it to its fullest so that it does run your entire business and life, I am here to help. Either get my made-for-you templates in Asana Essentials, or work with me 1:1 for your custom needs. I can't wait to help you get control of your business through Asana.

Asana makes everything easier, saves you so much time and mental energy when used right, and really is there to meet you where you are at in your business. It has so many different options so that you can customize it to work with your unique brain in your unique business. You can use colours, tags, graphics, and more. You can organize it in many different ways as well. It's just everything you need as an online business owner. Oh, and you can do this all with the free version too. That's my specialty, actually - helping you optimize the free version of Asana.

It really is my everything and I can help make it your everything too. Here are some of my favourite things about Asana and why it has been a game-changer in my and my clients' businesses:

  1. It’s user-friendly: you don't have to be an expert to use Asana. Of course, with practice and knowledge you can create a more efficient system, but it's quick and easy to just get started!

  2. It's pretty 😍: Asana is just nice to look at, in my opinion. And you can personalize it and colour-code and it's just so colourful and pretty that you actually want to use it regularly, or at least I do πŸ˜‰

  3. Multiple views: in Asana, you have options for different views of the same information so however your brain works you can have that translated into your views. You have lists, boards, calendars, everything you may need - all within the free version too!

  4. It's free: so much is included in the free version!! Everything I have mentioned so far is for free and you can even include up to 15 team members 🀯

  5. Unicorns and narwals and rainbows, oh my: Asana rewards you for checking off tasks (as if clicking the checkmark wasn't satisfying enough - just me?) with unicorns flying across your screen. How fun is that?!
